Joseph McKenna (August 10, 1843–November 21, 1926) was an American politician who served in all three branches of the U.S. federal government, as a member of the U.S. and artistic director Leif Bjaland, the Florida West Coast Symphony is the oldest continuing orchestra in Florida, and was recently ranked second among 33 Florida musical organizations by the grants panel of the Florida Arts Cultural Institutions Program. With a dual mission of performance and education and more than 100 performances each season, the organization is an arts leader in Sarasota, offering a broad range of classical, pops and special event concerts along with a variety of community outreach programs. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Performance and Programming Over the last decade, orchestral programs have been expanded, musicians of the finest caliber have been secured and performances have achieved a high degree of excellence. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Education for All Ages and Abilities Music education is a top priority at the Florida West Coast Symphony. Adult classes include string instruction and a lecture series, while young children can participate in two pre-youth orchestras or explore music through moving, singing and playing instruments. The Youth Orchestra Program is open to youth from third grade through high school, and consists of two full orchestras and three string ensembles at different skill levels. The Symphony also hosts an annual Young Artists Concerto concerto (kənchâr`tō), musical composition usually for an orchestra and a soloist or a group of soloists. Community Outreach By venturing into the community to share the joy of music with young people, the Symphony hopes to develop an appreciation for the arts and plant seeds for a lifetime love of classical music. This initiative pairs the Symphony's resident ensembles with two Manatee County and two Sarasota County schools for one-year artistic residencies.
