As an indigenous artist of northern New South Wales, Australia, Leslie (Monash U.) presents a rare interpretation of Aboriginal art and experience from an Aboriginal perspective. Seeking to further cross-cultural understanding, she traces the history of Aboriginal art in three periods since colonization: the 19th century-1930s, 1930s-1970s, and 1970s to the present renaissance in Aborigine art and its critical appreciation as art beyond anthropological interest. The lives, works and themes of three late contemporary artists are then presented with an emphasis on the effects of assimilation policy on them: Albert Namatjira, Les Griggs, and Lin Onus. The beautifully-illustrated volume is distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
