Abolish the minimum wage.

Abolish the Minimum Wage

ON JANUARY January: see month.  1, 1981, the minimum wage increased to $3.35 an hour. In his election debate with Jimmy Carter, Reagan had highlighted the minimum wage's harmful effects; as President, he fought off any further increases. His Administration didn't did·n't

manage to abolish the minimum wage, but at least he prevented it from rising.

This was no small accomplishment. As any economist knows, increasing the minimum wage threatens the jobs of at least skilled workers: Many of them produce so little they can't be profitably employed at a higher wage. Even President Carter's Minimum Wage Study Commission reported that every 10 per cent increase in the minimum wage causes a 1 to 2.5 per cent decline in teenage jobs. Simply by not increasing the minimum wage, Reagan "created" 13,000 to 300,000 teenage jobs.

But now accomplishment is under attack. Senator Kennedy, chairman of the Senate Labor and Human Resources The fancy word for "people." The human resources department within an organization, years ago known as the "personnel department," manages the administrative aspects of the employees.  Committee, recently announced his committee's desire to raise the minimum wage. When Kennedy asked Labor Secretary Brock brock

This is one issue on which Reagan's head and heart should lead in the same direction. Don't raise the minimum wage. If anything, abolish it.
