DANVERS, Mass. -- Abiomed Inc. (NASDAQ: ABMD) today announced its schedule of events at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) 45th Annual Meeting, being held January 26 - 28, at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, California. STS is the world's largest professional organization of cardiothoracic surgeons, with more than 5,600 members. Abiomed will exhibit its comprehensive portfolio of heart recovery products spanning the continuum of cardiovascular patient care from the catheterization lab (cath lab) to the surgery suite.

The Abiomed STS booth (#641), will include daily demonstrations and hands-on simulations of its extensive heart recovery product suite, including: Impella 2.5; Impella 5.0; iPulse(TM) Combination Console Platform; AB5000[TM] portable driver; BVS5000([R]) Blood Pump; and AB5000(TM)Circulatory Support System. The cath lab simulator will provide education and training for physicians and demonstrate the ease of placing the Impella 2.5 catheter.

Prior to the start of the conference, Abiomed will host an invite-only evening reception on Sunday, January 25, featuring a presentation on the use of Impella 5.0, by Anson Cheung, M.D. Surgical Director of Cardiac Transplantation at St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia. Additionally, during the first day of the conference, on Monday, January 26, the W. Gerald Austen Young Investigator Award will be presented to an individual embarking on a career in cardiothoracic research and education, with a focus on investigating recovery after acute cardiogenic shock. Established by the Society in 2007 and sponsored by Abiomed, the award is a tribute to W. Gerald Austen, M.D., who is internationally recognized for his contributions as a cardiac surgeon, teacher, and clinical investigator. Recipients receive $40,000 for costs of conducting research, and up to an additional $10,000 for associated indirect costs, for a total of up to $50,000.
