It has its headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts and belongs to the Harte-Hanks group. Founded in 1988, Aberdeen's research is used by over 2. , on messaging security trends in today's IT market.

The Aberdeen Group's Messaging Security Benchmark Report: Strategies for Securing Inbound and Outbound Corporate Communications Corporate communications is the process of facilitating information and knowledge exchanges with internal and key external groups and individuals that have a direct relationship with an enterprise. , surveyed more than 116 companies to determine how IT organizations are using messaging security products to improve the efficiency of their organizations.

The report finds that most IT organizations are still focused on preventing inbound messaging security threats like malware (MALicious softWARE) Software designed to destroy, aggravate and otherwise make life unhappy. See crimeware, virus, worm, logic bomb, macro virus and Trojan. , however, despite an increased awareness about confidential data leaks, only a minority of respondents have technology in place to address this outbound threat.

Most IT organizations take the necessary precautions to control inbound messaging threats, with 89 percent deploying technology against them, however most still fail to address the equally important risk of outbound data leaks. 80 percent of companies surveyed are aware of and concerned with the loss of confidential data via outbound email, though only 43 percent have implemented messaging security solutions to mitigate these acknowledged outbound security threats.

"Inbound and outbound email security should be viewed as connected -- not as separate problems," says Willy Leichter, director of product marketing for the MailGate[R] product suite for Tumbleweed Communications Tumbleweed Communications Corp. provides messaging security solutions for enterprise and government customers of all sizes [1]. Organizations use their products to block security threats, protect information, and conduct business online. . "Organizations need consistent policy controls, effective content filtering See Web filtering and parental control software. , and robust security products to keep out inbound threats and prevent leaks of sensitive data at the corporate gateway."

Having acknowledged outbound data loss as an issue, respondents have indicated they intend to rely on encryption solutions more than any other in the coming year, with 25 percent planning to deploy encryption in the next 12 months. This compares with outbound messaging security technologies at 14 percent and integrated inbound/outbound technologies at 16 percent also.

By using integrated messaging security products like Tumbleweed's MailGate, companies have an effective defense against network attacks, spam, and virus outbreaks, as well as controlling sensitive data leaving the company via email, due to its content filtering, encryption and policy controls to enforce central corporate email policies. Unlike other products that may rely on third-party solutions for encryption and anti-spam technology, MailGate delivers best-of-breed, integrated email security solutions that are powerful and easy to manage. With the MailGate product suite, Tumbleweed has set out to address these equally important problems in companies today - block inbound threats while securing outbound traffic Traffic originating in the continental United States destined for overseas or overseas traffic moving in a general direction away from the continental United States. .
