It is widely used in datacenters to save space and improve system management. Either self-standing or rack mounted, the chassis provides the power supply, and each blade has its own CPU, memory and  (plug-in server cards or possibly disk-less) offer new benefits that promise better control and utilization of processing power, as well as economic relief for information technology (IT) executives. Used as an "edge" solution, first generation blade servers can deliver a 30%-50% cost savings over conventional designs. However, their ultimate usefulness -- and that of following generations -- will depend on how effectively the suppliers and independent software (IS) buyers design their blade server and backend-storage architectures.

Moreover, part of that planning should include an effective, secure, robust, high-performance system storage environment. It is also essential that IT managers have a good grasp of the important principles of storage area networks and SAN virtualization An umbrella term for enhancing a computer's ability to do work. Following are the ways virtualization is used.

"Blade servers offer the next leap in density, economy, and rapid and flexible deployment," says Tom Manter, Research Director for Windows Technologies and Industry Standard Architectures. "However, before IT users can realize the full potential of blade servers' value-add, suppliers need to overcome some key administrative limitations."
