Abel Brown, whose primary means of public communication was through letters and reports to the abolitionist journal The Liberator Liberator

 and his own papers The Tocsin of Liberty and The Albany Patriot. He was also a tireless speaker, often appearing on the platform with freed slaves. Upon his death in his early thirties his wife Catherine, using his original documents, here created a "living collection" of his words more than an obituary in his memory. The result is a primary document with limited commentary and reflects Brown's passion, commitment as a Christian to justice, and sense that it would be decades before abolition The destruction, annihilation, abrogation, or extinguishment of anything, but especially things of a permanent nature—such as institutions, usages, or customs, as in the abolition of Slavery.
