Abbottabad wins overall Inter-District Boxing Championship trophy.

By PESHAWAR, May 21, 2011 (Balochistan Times): Abbottabad with two gold, four silvers and two bronze medals by recording 90 points won the overall trophy of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inter-District Boxing Championship which concluded here at Lala Aman Boxing Arena on Thursday. Host Peshawar grabbed second position with five gold medals and no silver and bronze medals recorded 75 points while Swat with one gold, four bronze medals got 37 points. District Dir secured 25 points and Haripur with 20 points got fourth and fifth position in the three-day event. Ghulam Hasan, who also grabbed gold medal for Peshawar in 75kg, was declared the best pugilist of the Championship in which more 150 pugilists took part. The pugilists from Mansehra, Haripur, Abbottabad, Mardan, Swat, Dir, and host Peshawar took part in 11 different weight categories. Provincial Minister for Sports Syed Aqil Shah was the chief guest on this occasion, who besides giving away trophies also awarded gold, silver and bronze medals to all the position holders. Speaking on this occasion, Syed Aqil Shah lauded the efforts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Waqar Maroof and Secretary Mirza Jalil and other office-bearers for the promotion of boxing in the province. He said after construction of Lala Aman Boxing Arena more funds have been allocated to make the complex fully computerize in order to make it according to the international needs. He also promised to hold Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA Sports Festival. He said soon an organizing committee would be announced for the smooth sailing of the event. He said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would hold camps well before the commencement of the fourth Provincial Games to be held this year in Quetta. Waqar Maroof on this occasion thanked the minister for ensuring all out support to the association besides increasing the grant of all the association three times. He disclosed that in July this year Hazara Cup will be organized in Abbottabad while in November this year All-Pakistan NBP Boxing Tournament would be organized in Peshawar. He said the association also distributed equipments of worth Rs 0.2 million among the district boxing association. He also announced to hold a camp of the short-listed probables.
