RHOAN Abbott raced to an impressive men's open victory yesterday in the Mansoori Catering Bahrain Biathlon biathlon (bīăth`lŏn), sport in which cross-country skiers race across hilly terrain, occasionally stopping to shoot with rifles at sets of fixed targets. Abbott was the best individual finisher in the seniors' event, which featured over 100 participants, some of whom were entered as teams, all of whom were battling it out over a 600-metre swim in the sea followed by a six-kilometre run along a partially off-road course around Al Hamala Beach Resort.

Abbott completed the race in a total time of 30 minutes, 53 seconds, more than half a minute ahead of men's open runner-up Brad Goggin, who clocked in in 31:34. Bader Al Azmi claimed third in the same category with a time of 33:08.

On the distaff, Ruth Tucker won the lady's open with a dominant performance that saw her finish with a gap of over two minutes from her closest challenger.

Tucker completed the biathlon in 37:19. Taking the runner-up spot was Jenefer Bower in 39:35, while Emily Crossman managed to beat out Joanna Joanna, in the Bible
Joanna, in the New Testament.

Among the teams, Bahraini Olympian and national team swimmer Omar Yousef partnered with runner Ali Almotawaa to emerge the best among the men. They secured the men's team victory in 27:37.

Yousef was the very first out of the water in 9:02. He then handed over the duties to Almotawaa who was later among the quickest to finish the run. He timed it in 18:35. The pair combined for a mark of 30:06 in second overall position, with McCarthy clocking a 9:49 time in the sea and Ambar running for 20:17.

Trailing not far were the ladies team of Glennis and Anna Wisniewski. They won their category in a team time of 30:42, as Glennis came out of the water in 9:45 and Anna completed her run in 20:57.

In the seniors' other individual categories, Mohammed Idris won the men's 40, Glenn Nicholson won the men's 45, Hamad Alhadi claimed the men's 50, Nigel Gibson Nigel Gibson is an activist and scholar. He was born in London and was an active militant in the 1984 -1985 Miners' Strike. While in London he also met South African exiles from the Black Consciousness Movement and, in conversation with the exiles, developed an influential  won the men's 55, and Ebrahim Mandeel along with Shaikh Ebrahim bin Abdulla Al Khalifa were the top two in the men's 60.
