 Northwestern Hospital's Stroke Program has been awarded Primary Stroke Center Certification and the Gold Seal of Approval(TM). The program earned the designations from the Joint Commission Accreditation accreditation,

 stroke, which is the nation's third leading cause of death. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds and someone dies of a stroke every 3.1 minutes. The Abbott Northwestern Stroke Program has consistently demonstrated a lower than expected mortality rate, despite being a referral site for the most severe strokes.

The Institute combines 50 neuroscience physicians, 180 neuroscience nurses and a 20 year history of collaborative program development to provide care across the entire spectrum of neurological disorders This is a list of major and frequently observed neurological disorders (e.g. Alzheimer's disease), symptoms (e.g.back pain), signs (e.g. aphasia) and syndromes (e.g. Aicardi syndrome). .

The certification is based on the recommendations for primary stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association's statements/guidelines for stroke care. The Joint Commission launched the program--the nation's first--in 2003.
