Abbott Japan Announces that Hokunalin Tape Significantly Improves COPD Symptoms.


Tokyo, Japan, Sept 22, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - Abbott Japan has announced the results of its recent clinical study of Hokunalin Tape (tulobuterol), the company's proprietary ethical drug used in the treatment of bronchial asthma bronchial asthma

The clinical study conducted on 119 COPD (moderate and severe) patients in 16 university hospitals nationwide. The examinees, who are aged 40 or older and in a stable period, were divided into two groups: the one who were administered with Hokunalin Tape and the other with Serevent (salmeterol), COPD drug currently marketed by GlaxoSmithKline.

 Respiratory Questionnaire, the index for assessing the condition of life of COPD patients, Abbott Japan compared the two groups. As a result, the group with Hokunalin Tape showed a significant improvement in terms of the quality of life, breathing function, nighttime sleep, and drug compliance.

Accordingly, the company has concluded that these results indicate Hokunalin Tape is equivalent or superior to Serevent, the drug widely used in the treatment of COPD.

Details of the study results were presented at the European Respiratory Society 15th Annual Congress held in Copenhagen on September 19, by Juntendo University School of Medicine Professor Seyama. Currently, Hokunalin Tape is co-marketed by Abbott Japan and Maruho.
