Solution Boosts User Productivity by Eliminating 99 Percent of Spam

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Abaca Technology Corporation, an innovator in email protection and messaging security, today announced that its Email Protection Gateway[TM] has helped Eau Claire, Wisconsin-based Community Health Partnership, Inc. save millions of dollars' worth of user productivity by eliminating 99 percent of the customer's spam.

Email Users Inundated with Spam

Community Health Partnership is a nonprofit, contracted Medicare and Medicaid care management organization that offers a range of services to help frail elderly and physically disabled adults live independently for as long as possible. The organization is expanding rapidly and, partly as a result, email users found themselves inundated with spam.

"The Chief Executive Officer was getting over 400 messages a day, and the finance department was getting 500 to 1,000 messages a day," said Jay Roberts, network engineer of Community Health Partnership who was tasked with eliminating spam. "Our log files couldn't handle it, and our spam-blocking software couldn't keep up."

"The proliferation of spam is an ongoing productivity drain at many businesses," noted Steve Kirsch, founder, chairman of the board, and chief executive officer of Abaca Technology Corporation. "However, the effects are much more devastating in the small to medium-sized business sector. These smaller organizations literally can't afford to waste their human and network resources on spam."

Outstanding Tech Support Streamlines Configuration Changes

Intrigued by Abaca's patent-pending ReceiverNet[TM] technology which uses a proprietary algorithm to block 99 percent of spam, and the 99 percent accuracy guarantee, Roberts decided to trial the Abaca Email Protection Gateway. However, Community Health Partnership had just installed a new firewall which meant Abaca's hardware/software appliance had to meet an adaptability challenge in order to be configured and meet the new network requirements, which it did.

"The kind of support Abaca gave us is unheard of in the Information Technology world," said Roberts. "Usually companies ship you a box and tell you to go figure it out, or transfer you to an offshore call center that can't help you. Abaca didn't do that. They provided local support from people who know what they're doing. They did the research and worked out the configuration changes for us. Then they talked us through them step by step."

Eliminating Spam Saves Millions

Once the configuration changes were complete and the Abaca Email Protection Gateway turned on, Community Health Partnership's spam problem disappeared immediately.

"I've never seen anything like it," said Roberts. "I would have been happy with a 90 percent improvement, but this is more like 99 percent!"

Since the installation of the Abaca Email Protection Gateway in June 2007, Community Health Partnership's network bandwidth has increased approximately 25 percent and the organization has recouped millions of dollars' worth of lost productivity.

"Before we installed the Email Protection Gateway, the average employee was spending at least 15 minutes a day on spam," explained Roberts. "Multiply that by 450 employees over a period of three months and it's clear that the Abaca Email Protection Gateway quickly pays for itself."
