Typically made of aluminum, heat sinks are widely used in amplifiers and other electronic devices that build up heat. Small heat sinks are the most economical method for cooling microprocessors and other chips.  family optimized to cool Intel's Pentium(R) II microprocessor.

Aavid's new thermal solutions incorporate system level thermal optimization and robust mechanical attachment to the processor cartridge and motherboard.

"Months of system-level and component-level analysis have shaped these designs to meet the requirements of the system integrator," says Christopher Chapman, Aavid computer industry manager. "Changes in microprocessor and motherboard architecture are all incorporated into our thermal solutions for the Pentium II The successor to the Pentium Pro from Intel. Pentium II refers to the CPU chip or the PC that uses it. Code named "Klamath," the Pentium II was a Pentium Pro with MMX multimedia instructions.  microprocessor. Locating pins, interface material, slots for Aavid's Side-Slide(TM) brand attachment clips, holes for Riv-Screw(R) brand fasteners, and features for the heat sink supporter that attaches to the motherboard, are included as standard features."

Thermal Performance

Using IcePak(R) thermal modeling software by Fluent Inc., Aavid has optimized the heat sink for various chassis designs. This computational fluid dynamics Computational fluid dynamics

Aavid optimized the 3646 for systems where air flow is directed using duct work inside the computer, and designed the 3647 for undirected air flow. The thermal performance of the 3646 is 0.92 C/watt and the 3647 is 0.90 C/watt. Customers using LPX LPX Louisiana Pacific (stock symbol)

Mechanical Performance

The heat sink attaches directly to the package of the Pentium II microprocessor. This can be done with either Aavid's Side-Slide brand clip (2 per assembly) or Avdel's Riv-Screw brand fasteners (4 per assembly). All Aavid solutions for the Intel Pentium II microprocessor allow both attachment types. Motherboard accessories, including a processor retention module and a heat sink support module, are required to pass shock and vibration tests. Aavid has also taken into account center of gravity and weight requirements during its design process to make sure that their advanced thermal solutions mechanical assembly remains stable in us.
