Earnings per share for the third quarter of 1997 were $0.25 based on $2.2 million of net income, compared to $.10 on $0.8 million of net income for the same quarter a year earlier.

Aavid Chairman and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Ronald F. Borelli said, "The third quarter presented exciting growth opportunities for Aavid's thermal management solutions, particularly in the computer segment of our business where more powerful microprocessors began to enter the market in higher volumes. We believe this momementum will carry through the fourth quarter and into 1998 as we continue to position Aavid for increased marketshare through global expansion of our production capacity and strategic customer relationships.

"We are also pleased to report that our Applied Thermal Technologies design service business continues to grow -- confirming our view that the demand for outsourcing (1) Contracting with outside consultants, software houses or service bureaus to perform systems analysis, programming and datacenter operations. Contrast with insourcing. See netsourcing, ASP, SSP and facilities management.  of thermal management solutions will accelerate with the rapidly increasing thermal management challenges facing the electronics industry. We believe that Aavid is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this opportunity, by providing our customers with the total thermal solution: thermal analysis Thermal analysis is a branch of materials science where the properties of materials are studied as they change with temperature. Techniques include:
  • Differential scanning calorimetry
  • Dynamic mechanical analysis
  • Thermomechanical analysis

through Aavid Thermal Products' global manufacturing and distribution.

"We are also pleased to announce our acquisition of the remaining 49 percent of our Taiwanese joint venture. This acquisition greatly increases Aavid's presence in one of the most important manufacturing regions in the world. The significance of the region to our thermal products business had already proven itself with the initial success of the joint venture. We intend to expand our technology and manufacturing investment in this operation to better support our Asian customer base," Borelli concluded.

Third Quarter Highlights

-- Aavid's thermal products group opened a facility dedicated to developing thermal solutions for the computer market. The new 47,000 square foot facility houses manufacturing and engineering operations less than an hour away from Aavid's largest manufacturing site in Laconia, N.H. and the headquarters of its Fluent fluent /flu·ent/ (floo´int) flowing effortlessly; said of speech.  software operations in Hanover, N.H. The new facility supports Aavid's customers in the computer industry, who often face volatile market demands and short product cycles, without disrupting efforts in existing plants for other customers' thermal solution needs. -- Aavid's thermal products group announced a $1 million European investment to meet demand for its new range of thermal solutions for OEMs using Intel's Pentium(r) II microprocessor. The investment in its UK-based manufacturing facility increases Aavid's total worldwide manufacturing capacity to more than 500,000 square feet and will allow Aavid to respond more rapidly and flexibly to European customers with engineering support. -- Aavid's software business opened an office in Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba
