Aavid Introduces Heat Sinks for Intel's Slot II Pentium II Xeon Microprocessors.

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1998--

Thermal Management Solutions in Production Worldwide to cool

Intel's Newest Microprocessor

Today at Wescon/IC Expo '98, Aavid Thermal Products, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aavid Thermal Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:AATT AATT Advanced Air Transportation Technologies (NASA air traffic control project)
AATT Advanced Aviation Transportation Technology
AATT Advanced Air Traffic Technologies (US FAA)

), the world's leader in thermal management solutions for power and digital electronics, announced the worldwide availability of thermal solutions optimized to cool Intel's Pentium(R) II Xeon(tm) microprocessor. Aavid's new thermal solutions incorporate system level thermal optimization and robust mechanical attachment to the processor cartridge and motherboard Also called the "system board," it is the main printed circuit board in an electronic device, which contains sockets that accept additional boards. In a desktop computer, the motherboard contains the CPU, chipset, PCI bus slots, AGP slot, memory sockets and controller circuits for the .

"CFD CFD - Computational Fluid Dynamics  (Computational Fluid Dynamic) analysis of system-level and component-level thermal performance have shaped these designs to meet the requirements of the system integrator See systems integrator. ," says Aavid Marketing Manager Chris Chapman. "Phase-change interface material, locating pins, holes for standard hardware, and features for the heat sink A material that absorbs heat. Typically made of aluminum, heat sinks are widely used in amplifiers and other electronic devices that build up heat. Small heat sinks are the most economical method for cooling microprocessors and other chips.  support that attaches to the motherboard, are included as standard features."

Thermal Performance

Using IcePak(R) CFD thermal modeling software by Fluent fluent /flu·ent/ (floo´int) flowing effortlessly; said of speech.  Inc., Aavid has optimized an Intel-enabled, lower-cost Aavid version of the heat sink for various OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  chassis designs.  software determines the flow and direction of system airflow around the heat sink and inside a computer server chassis. Aavid has designed two heat sinks as a result of the analysis: 027846 (Intel enabled) and 028908 (Aavid version). Aavid optimized both versions for single, dual, and quad array of Xeon microprocessors.

Performance

The thermal performance, based upon typical server airflow, of the 027846 is 0.72(Degree)C/watt and the 028908 is 0.73(Degree)C/watt.

The heat sinks attach directly to the package of the Pentium II Xeon (processor) Pentium II Xeon - The successor to Intel Corporation's Pentium II processor.

The Xeon has the same P6 core as existing Pentium Pro/Pentium II units, but it supports a 100 MHz system bus and offers as much as 2 MB of level 2 cache.

Pricing and Availability

Aavid is in volume production of both thermal solutions worldwide. In quantities of 5,000 the 027846 is $10.75 per unit, the 028908 is $9.53; both include the interface material. Prototype quantities and pricing are also available.
