Aavid Announces Low-cost Family of Cooling Solutions for Applications Using Intel's Celeron Microprocessor.

CONCORD, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 1998--

Industry's Broadest Array of Product Offerings Include Passive

and Active Thermal Solutions Manufactured Locally Around the Globe

Aavid Thermal Products, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aavid Thermal Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:AATT AATT Advanced Air Transportation Technologies (NASA air traffic control project)
AATT Advanced Aviation Transportation Technology
AATT Advanced Air Traffic Technologies (US FAA)
AATT Absolute Arrival Time Technique
), the world's leader in providing thermal management solutions to the power and digital electronics industries, announces a family of solutions optimized to cool applications using Intel's Celeron(tm) microprocessor microprocessor, integrated circuit containing the arithmetic, logic, and control circuitry required to interpret and execute instructions from a computer program.  in a single-edge processor package (SEPP (Single Edge Processor Package) A CPU module from Intel that held Celeron chips and their L2 cache chips. The SEPP, which plugged into Slot 1 on the motherboard, was the bare printed circuit board. ). Aavid's new thermal solutions offer OEMs and design engineers the best combination of price, performance, and flexibility for unique product designs.

Aavid's thermal solutions for Celeron are drop-in solutions offered as passive or active fan heat sinks A material that absorbs heat. Typically made of aluminum, heat sinks are widely used in amplifiers and other electronic devices that build up heat. Small heat sinks are the most economical method for cooling microprocessors and other chips. . Aavid also provides customers the flexibility to purchase complete Celeron thermal solutions that include a passive or active heat sink, thermal interface material A Thermal Interface Material (aka TIM) is used to fill the gaps between thermal transfer surfaces, such as between microprocessors and heatsinks, in order to increase thermal transfer efficiency. These gaps are normally filled with air which is a very poor conductor. , attachment clips and plastic retention supports, or as individual components. Aavid's complete thermal solutions mechanically support the Celeron processor card in a Slot 1 connection, while drawing heat away from the processor to ensure high product performance and reliability.

"Since all components of our thermal solution for Celeron applications are manufactured locally on three continents, Aavid can provide customers with a competitive, one-stop offering that saves time and money for purchasers worldwide," said Christopher Chapman, computer industry manager for Aavid Thermal Products. "Aavid's thermal solutions are also approved by Intel to cool Celeron processors, giving customers an added assurance of high performance in their final product designs."

Passive Solutions Offer Best Value

Aavid provides three passive heat sink configurations priced and designed for applications that demand low-cost and high-reliability. Aavid's straight fin extruded heat sinks (#366014U00000) are ideal for applications where system airflow is ample, and represent the most cost-effective passive solution, and are available with or without pre-applied SOFTFACE(tm) thermal interface material.

Aavid also offers two cross-cut heat sinks for applications where system airflow and package space are at a premium. Aavid's cross cut solution (#366024U20000) comes pre-tooled allowing for quick and easy manual attachment with a standard thumb clip.

Aavid's 30-mm cross cut solution (#366124U00000) is a low-profile, passive heat sink designed for applications that require the maximum amount of cooling in a low airflow and tight package environment.

Unique Active Fan Heat Sink Designed to Help Reduce Assembly Costs

and are pre-tooled with extruded screw screw, simple machine consisting essentially of a solid cylinder, usually of metal, around which an inclined plane winds spirally, either clockwise or counterclockwise.  bosses to reduce assembly costs. This active Celeron thermal solution comes with a standard 40-mm fan, and can accept an optional 50-mm fan for maximum cooling in a low airflow environment.

Pricing and Availability

Aavid's Celeron heat sinks are available as individual components or as complete thermal solutions to fit standard Intel Celeron processors. Pricing per passive unit starts at $2.00 each in 5K quantities. Fan heat sinks start at $5.25 each in 5K quantities. Complete thermal solution kits that include heat sink, pre-applied SOFTFACE(tm) interface material, one attachment clip and a set of plastic supports, start at $5.50 each in 5K quantities. Aavid's international delivery is currently 4 to 6 weeks.
