AZERBAIJAN - Turkey-Greece Pipeline.A partly related 285-km, $300m gas pipeline is to be built between the borders of Turkey and Greece. In July 2000 Sofregaz, a unit of Gaz de France Gaz de France (GDF) is a French company which produces, transports and sells natural gas around the world and especially in France which is its main market, but also Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany and other European countries. , won a $5.2m contract to do the basic and detailed designs for the pipeline which will pump 500 MCM/year gas to Greece as from 2005. The line will run from Karacabey in the western Turkish city of Bursa Bursa, city, Turkey Bursa (b rsä`), city (1990 pop. 838,323), capital of Bursa prov., NW Turkey. to Komotini in Greece. Of the total length, 200 km will be laid in
Turkey and the rest in Greece.
Greece has agreed to buy Shah Deniz gas through this pipeline when the Turkish section from Georgia to Erzerum has been completed. An agreement was initialled in April 2002 during a visit to Baku by Greek Development Minister Akis Tsochadzopoulos. Baku and the Shah Deniz consortium hope to find additional buyers of the gas in South-Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria, Romania and the Balkans. The Greek government is helping in this respect. During his visit to Baku, Minister Tsochadzopoulos stated that Greece wants to become a corridor for gas supplies from Azerbaijan and other Caspian countries to Europe. He added: "Our aim is to emerge as an energy centre in South-East Europe, so as to support actively and substantively the overall EU energy market". Greece is negotiating to purchase gas from Iran as well, with Iran now supplying Turkey by pipeline. Washington and Ankara had worked hard on getting the Turkish route to be used for all the planned petroleum exports from the Caspian region, including the proposed but now shelved Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline This article or section contains information about a planned or expected pipeline. The promoters hoped that, apart from major cost savings to be made by using the same route for pipes to run parallel, the TCGP would also pump through Turkey Azeri gas to be produced from Shah Deniz and Absheron fields in the coming years. The project was stalled stall 1 n. 1. A compartment for one domestic animal in a barn or shed. 2. a. It cut its staff in Ashgabat and Tbilisi and reduced spending to a minimum until a final decision was taken on the project by Niyazov (see background in Vol. 55). |
