 hit the winner after 12 minutes to ensure Rovers suffered their first league defeat since Ayr dumped them six months ago.

And Samson says the win proves United can cope with what the division has to offer . He said: "It was a massive game and a must win for us even this early in the season. The boys have never lacked confidence but we haven't had the luck.

"We've played really well in most games and probably deserved more than we have had. It's brilliant to get three points and a clean sheet as well.

"The target is to stay in this league and we've got the players who are capable of doing it."

Relieved boss Brian Reid, who had seen his team go six games without a win, felt it was long overdue.

He said: "We played well and could have won by a lot more.We defended superbly and attacked well.

"Apart from the opening game against Partick it's the first time we have scored first and I have always said that was a vital thing to do."

Raith manager John McGlynn said: "Ayr probably deserved their victory as I don't think we did enough to get anything from the game.We dropped our standards and work rate which we can't afford to do.
