AXENT Technologies Inc., announces availability of OmniGuard/Enterprise Access Control for Windows 95 -- a new software product that protects information on mobile and desktop workstations.

ROCKVILLE, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1996--AXENT(TM) Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ

:AXNT), Monday announced OmniGuard/Enterprise Access Control(R) For Windows(TM) 95 (EAC/95), a new addition to its OmniGuard suite of enterprise security solutions.

EAC/95 will provide protection of sensitive information and enforcement of security standards on mobile and desktop workstations running the Windows 95 operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
.

Data on a desktop or notebook workstation is very difficult to protect because Windows 95 has no real built-in security. Notebooks travel everywhere, exposing them to loss or theft which can cause disclosure of sensitive corporate information.

Desktops are the gateway to the network and expose sensitive data if left connected when the user leaves momentarily. It is not enough just to provide this level of security protection, it is also necessary to deploy and manage such a solution over the enterprise.

EAC/95 is the comprehensive solution to these serious issues of enterprise-wide workstation security. EAC/95 includes a Security Manager for centralized administration, a Security Kernel The part of the operating system that grants access to users of the computer system.  for security enforcement, and an Audit Manager for reviewing security-related activity.

"With EAC/95, security administrators can now implement consistent security controls across the mobile and desktop workstation throughout the enterprise," remarked Pete Privateer privateer

EAC/95 provides the ability to define multiple user accounts, and require authentication (1) Verifying the integrity of a transmitted message. See message integrity, e-mail authentication and MAC.

(2) Verifying the identity of a user logging into a network.
before the user can access the workstation. Data security is provided through file-level access controls as well as encryption. Security functions such as auditing and secure object reuse are also provided to complete the offering.

EAC/95 provides an intuitive graphical interface See GUI.  which enables security administrators to define desktop and notebook security parameters at one central location and deploy them across network and stand-alone workstations. The central database contains information on user accounts, file sharing Copying files from one computer to another.  and workstation definitions.

It also makes it possible to instantly know which workstations each user has access to, and the level of protection provided on individual workstations.

The security kernel provides the enforcement of the security standards and guidelines set in the security manager. The product has been architected to provide seamless integration An addition of a new application, routine or device that works smoothly with the existing system. It implies that the new feature or program can be installed and used without problems. Contrast with "transparent," which implies that there is no discernible change after installation.  with the Windows 95 operating system.

The heart of the system is IntelliCrypt(TM), the built-in file protection mechanism which automatically encrypts and decrypts sensitive information. This IntelliCrypt mechanism eliminates encryption complexities from the end user. Files are protected based upon policy established by the security administrator, without user intervention.

EAC/95 provides for user identification and strong authentication at start-up time which is fully integrated with the Windows 95 log-on process. In case the user forgets his or her password, EAC/95 has a built in challenge/response system which enables a security administrator to allow access without physical intervention.

For workstations that are left unattended while still connected to the network, EAC/95 automatically "locks" the keyboard. Secure re-authentication is required before access to the session resumes.

Each EAC/95 protected workstation has a fully configurable audit trail that can be sorted, filtered, customized, displayed and printed or exported to industry standard formats via the third component, the Security Auditor. Audit trails can be stored locally or automatically sent to a file server.

For networked workstations, the security profiles can be automatically updated when a network logon occurs. This allows the adding/deleting of users and security settings without reinstallation of the software.

Stand-alone desktops and notebooks can be updated by email attachments or by diskette The official name for the floppy disk. See floppy disk.

EAC/95 will be available on Oct. 31, 1996, through AXENT Technologies or its authorized agents. Pricing starts at $139 per workstation.
