AXCESS Inc. Introduces Enhanced Wireless Monitoring Capabilities; ActiveTag Technology Provides Real-Time, Automated Status Information.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 2001

AXCESS Inc. (Nasdaq:AXSI), a leading provider of network-based asset productivity solutions, announced today the addition of sensor monitoring capabilities to the ActiveTag(TM) line of automatic wireless identification products. Combining sensors with wireless "tags" allows customers to more cost-effectively monitor critical environmental and operational conditions full-time, with information and alerts delivered over IP using the enterprise network and the Internet.

AXCESS' ActiveTag wireless tags are now available with either internal sensors or linked to external sensors via a wired interface. Among the numerous conditions that can be monitored are temperature, open/closed, motion, vibration, on/off, pressure and humidity humidity, moisture content of the atmosphere, a primary element of climate. Humidity measurements include absolute humidity, the mass of water vapor per unit volume of natural air; relative humidity (usually meant when the term humidity . Sensor tags can be programmed to user specified min/max limits, with alert messages automatically sent when conditions fall out of the allowable range (e.g. a technician See PC technician and software technician.  receives a page only when temperatures begin to exceed "safe" levels). Additionally, tags can be programmed to transmit a "beacon" message at periodic intervals to routinely log sensor data, monitor status and automatically alert operators to adverse trends or conditions.

"Wireless condition monitoring Condition monitoring is the process of monitoring a parameter of condition in machinery, such that a significant change is indicative of a developing failure. It is a major component of predictive maintenance.  is a natural extension of the ActiveTag product line," stated Richard Brown Richard Brown can refer to:

"By incorporating multiple forms of condition monitoring into the existing technology, we are able to offer more value to our customers by leveraging our wireless infrastructure beyond security applications to provide management with greater visibility into their operations, as well as reduced infrastructure costs and labor savings."

Wireless data collectors can be connected directly to the existing LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area.  hard-wired sensors and panels. The wireless nature also makes it easier to selectively implement monitoring when and where needed, along with the flexibility to move equipment around without having to reroute wiring.

The new sensor tags are compatible with the standard ActiveTag wireless identification and location system, making them ideal for tracking "mobile" items, such as computers, shared lab equipment and high-value inventory. The ActiveTag system can be integrated with AXCESS' digital video products to provide a comprehensive asset productivity solution that includes both remote visibility and digital video recording/playback over IP.

This unique product is proving to have significant demand in many industries. In particular, IT assets are highly susceptible to adverse environmental conditions, making them ideally suited for wireless monitoring. AXCESS' temperature-sensing tags, as well as "door open" sensing tags, are currently being used at several Internet data centers to maximize server uptime and secure customer equipment. Sensor tags also have application in manufacturing operations Manufacturing operations concern the operation of a facility, as opposed to maintenance, supply and distribution, health, and safety, emergency response, human resources, security, information technology and other infrastructural support organizations.  where equipment failure can literally bring production to a halt.
