AXCELL/MUENSTER ALLIANCE TO RESEARCH PROTEIN INTERACTIONS.

AxCell Biosciences, Newtown, Pa., a subsidiary of Cytogen Corporation (Nasdaq: CYTO), has signed a term sheet with University of Muenster (UOM) to research protein interactions associated with an undisclosed gene believed to

play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. According to the term sheet, both parties have agreed that intellectual property derived from the collaboration will be the joint property of AxCell and UOM, with AxCell retaining an exclusive option to negotiate an exclusive, worldwide, royalty-bearing license from UOM for any and all joint intellectual property.

"The agreement with the University of Muenster is further evidence of AxCell's efforts to expand into drug discovery and development through collaborations and partners. We believe that protein signaling pathway information will accelerate the discovery of new drug targets for a variety of signal transduction related diseases and facilitate more efficient and targeted pharmaceutical and biotechnology research and development," said Michael D. Becker, interim chief executive officer of AxCell Biosciences.

Upon execution of the final agreement, the principal goals of the research program will be to advance the functional understanding of an undisclosed UOM protein in neurodegenerative diseases by researching its signaling pathways. The collaboration will utilize select data from AxCell's ProChart(tm) database.

The research will be led by Dr. Joachim Kremerskothen and Dr. Angelika Barnekow, professor at the Department of Experimental Tumor Biology at the University of Muenster. Dr. Barnekow's laboratory focuses on studying the function of neuronal proteins that are encoded by dendritic-localized messenger RNA's (mRNA's). Proper dendritic translation of these transcripts are important for processes such as learning and memory, and a disturbed protein synthesis at postsynaptic sites can lead to neurodegenerative diseases or dementia.

"The function of this particular protein in neurodegenerative diseases is not yet clear, however, the presence of signaling domains implies that other proteins may participate in the pathway. Such potential partners have not yet been identified for this protein. Information from AxCell's signal transduction database should allow us to learn more about this protein and accelerate drug discovery efforts," said Dr. Kremerskothen.

By early 2001, scientists at AxCell were the first to successfully map all of the interactions of the known WW domain family, which is believed to play a role in the onset and progression of muscular dystrophy and neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's. Throughout 2001, AxCell made continued progress in mapping PDZ, SH3, and SH2 domain families. These data, which relate to several major disease areas such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, have been added to AxCell's ProChart database.
