VAN NUYS - Hundreds of people gathered in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 on Wednesday for the Armand Arabian Awards Luncheon to honor six individuals for special contributions they have made to the community.

```These honorees typify the kinds of people who live in the Valley and love the Valley, and who have contributed to the good of the city, the state and the world,'' said Armand Arabian, a former California Supreme Court associate justice.

The awards program was established in Arabian's name to honor people who unselfishly give of themselves for public service without asking for anything in return.

There were 400 people at the luncheon, many of them community leaders themselves who came to recognize the special honorees and the contributions of Arabian, a San Fernando Valley resident who is known for his leadership in protecting the rights of sexual-assault victims.

Those honored Wednesday at the luncheon in the Airtel Plaza Hotel were surgeon Dr. Richard Grossman, who created the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks; Daily News columnist Dennis McCarthy; CSUN CSUN California State University Northridge  President Jolene Koester; Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  aide Miriam Jaffe; retired UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
 basketball coach John Wooden; and Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy D. Baca.

Wooden, who coached basketball teams at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA comprises the College of Letters and Science (the primary undergraduate college), seven professional schools, and five professional Health Science schools. Since 2001, UCLA has enrolled over 33,000 total students, and that number is steadily rising. , from 1948 until 1975, won 10 NCAA NCAA

National Collegiate Athletic Association
 championships and set the standard for integrity in sports.

Koester - who was appointed in 2000 as president of California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an  - is the former provost of CSU See DSU/CSU.

 Sacramento. She was recognized for improving curriculum and facilities for tens of thousands of students who attend CSUN each year.

Grossman has received worldwide recognition for his work at the Grossman Burn Center and has been inducted into the Firefighters Hall of Fame by the California Department of Firefighters.

Baca, who joined the Sheriff's Department in 1965, has provided leadership, management and direction to thousands of sheriff's deputies and police officers throughout his law enforcement career.

Jaffe is chief of staff to Los Angeles Councilman Jack Weiss and served from 1996 to 2001 as chief of staff to Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys.

McCarthy, who has been with the Daily News since 1981, is known for his columns that stress the positive acts of average people stepping out of the shadows to make the Los Angeles area a better place.
