AWARDS FOR 'LIFESAVERS'.SCORES of people who have donated large amounts of blood are set to get together tonight to mark their lifesaving achievements. The Gold Award donors from all over Northern Ireland Northern Ireland: see Ireland, Northern. Northern Ireland Part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland occupying the northeastern portion of the island of Ireland. Area: 5,461 sq mi (14,144 sq km). Population (2001): 1,685,267. will congregate at a special awards night at Kings Hall, Belfast. Paul McElkerney, from the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion blood transfusion, transfer of blood from one person to another, or from one animal to another of the same species. Transfusions are performed to replace a substantial loss of blood and as supportive treatment in certain diseases and blood disorders. Donor Services general manager Charles Kinney said: "Hopefully by highlighting the achievement of these donors it will encourage others aged between 17 and 65 years of age to come forward." |
