AWARDS BANQUET TO SALUTE DIVERSE GROUP.

Ten individuals and four organizations will be honored as ``Heroes of Diversity'' today at an awards banquet celebrating the county's second annual Cultural Diversity Month.

This year, the Ventura County Cultural Diversity Board will honor the following Ventura County residents for their work to promote multiculturalism and human rights:

Harry Lee, director of the Ventura County Leadership Academy;

, vice principal at Oxnard High School Oxnard High School, or OHS as it is commonly referred to, is a public four-year high school serving grades 9-12 in Oxnard, California. The school is the oldest in the Oxnard Union High School District, and is the oldest public high school in all of Ventura County. ;

Lester Goldberg, volunteer dedicated to the county's homeless;

Tina Rasnow, attorney and volunteer dedicated to youth and family issues;

Charles Cohen Based in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, Charles Cohen has been creating music since 1971. Taking inspiration from free jazz pianist Cecil Taylor[1], his music is entirely improvisational and produced solely on a vintage Buchla Music Easel synthesizer, an extremely , an attorney dedicated to promoting affordable housing;

Cliff Rodrigues, an educator and coordinator of special projects for bilingual education;

Ron Golden, an attorney who has worked pro bono Short for pro bono publico [Latin, For the public good]. The designation given to the free legal work done by an attorney for indigent clients and religious, charitable, and other nonprofit entities.  with the patients and families of Camarillo State Hospital;

and the Rev. Beth Ann Suggs, pastor with the Unity Church.

The board will also honor four groups as exemplary organizations in promoting multicultural awareness:

United Jewish Appeal/Federation of Ventura County, which sponsors county eighth-graders to visit the Museum of Tolerance The Museum of Tolerance is a multimedia museum in Los Angeles, California, with an associated museum in New York City, designed to examine racism and prejudice in the United States and the world with a strong focus on the history of the Holocaust.  in Los Angeles;

Mesa Education Foundation, which promotes multicultural awareness through the fine arts;

Community for Unity, a group of parents and families of children killed by acts of violence;

and Ventura County Pro Per Clinic, which provides legal advice to county residents.

The board banquet will begin at 6:30 tonight at the Mandalay Beach Resort Hotel. Tickets are $50 for adults and $25 for students. For more information, call (805) 987-1697.
