AWARDS AND HONORS IN THE NEWS.


Dance-based "musicals" were winners at the 1999 Tony Awards, held June 7 at the Gershwin Theatre: Fosse and Swan Lake Swan Lake (Russian: Лебединое Озеро, Lebedinoye Ozero, Swan Lake  each took home three awards. Fosse won for Best Musical, Orchestrations, and Lighting; Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake is a ballet that was first staged at Sadler's Wells theatre in London in 1995. The longest running ballet in London's West End and on Broadway, it has enjoyed two successful tours in the U.K.  won for Best Choreography, Costumes, and Director of a Musical.... The Fred Astaire Awards, held May 27, also recognized Swan Lake, with the Best Dancer award going to Adam Cooper Introduction
Adam Cooper was a character in the Australian police drama series ‘Blue Heelers’. He joined the cast in late 1994 while the programme was still in its first season. He was transferred to Mt.
 and a special award for "Concept, Direction, and Choreography" to Bourne Bourne, town (1990 pop. 16,064), Barnstable co., SE Mass., crossed by Cape Cod Canal; settled 1627, inc. 1884. Bourne Bridge (1935), across the canal, made the town an entry point to Cape Cod and a resort and commercial center. . Patricia Birch received the best choreographer award for Parade.... Murray Louis received an honorary Doctorate of Performing Arts from Ohio University on June 12.... Judith Jamison was given an honorary doctorate from University of Massachussetts, Boston, June 5.... On May 21 the Juilliard School awarded honorary doctorates to Harvey Lichtenstein and Bill T. Jones, who did an impromptu dance in celebration. Two weeks later at his Brooklyn Academy of Music Brooklyn Academy of Music, performing arts center located in the borough of Brooklyn, N.Y. and popularly known as BAM. Founded in 1859 and opened in 1861, it is the oldest such institution still in operation in the United States.  retirement gala, which featured performances by Mark Morris, Trisha Brown, and the BAM/Restoration-DanceAfrica Ensemble, Lichtenstein followed suit, dancing giddily among balloons and confetti.... Ralph Lemon was given a 1999 Alpert Award ($50,000) from CalArts.... The 1999 Guggenheim Fellows in Dance are choreographers Chris Aiken, Blondell Cummings, Tanya Leullieux (La Tania), Susan Rethorst, and Reginald Yates, and biographer Claudia Roth Pierpont.
