Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 civic leaders will announce on Friday the names of five finalists for the 43rd annual Fernando Award, a prestigious honor recognizing volunteerism and commitment to community service.

Each year, a selection committee made up of business and civic representatives from diverse groups Valleywide choose the finalists from a pool of nominees.

This year there are 18 nominees, ranging from grass-roots community leaders to business owners and political activists.

The five finalists will be announced at an 11:45 a.m. luncheon Friday of the Fernando Award Foundation at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel, 21850 Oxnard St. in Warner Center.

The winner will be announced Nov. 2 at a formal dinner.

The five finalists will be selected from among the five women and 13 men nominated nom·i·nate

1. To propose by name as a candidate, especially for election.

2. To designate or appoint to an office, responsibility, or honor.

The nominees are: insurance broker Stanley Bryant; dentist Robert Fields; community activists Richard Friedkin, Rose Goldwater, and Andrew Heiger; real estate investor A real estate investor is someone who actively or passively invests in real estate. An active investor may buy a property, make repairs and/or improvements to the property, and sell it later for a profit.  J. Richard Leyner; graphics business owner Sheldon Mende; attorney William F. Powers Jr.; community activist Ruth Richter; attorney Bob Scott
