AWARD GIVEN TO GREAT ESCAPES.Byline: Daily News The Daily News' Great Escapes travel section was named best in the country for its circulation category in a contest conducted by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation. The Daily News won for newspapers with a circulation of 350,000 or less. Best-section awards also went to the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times in the 350,000 to 499,000 category and to the Baltimore Sun Baltimore Sun Daily newspaper published in Baltimore, Md., U.S. It was begun as a four-page penny tabloid in 1837 by Arunah Shepherdson Abell, a journeyman printer from Rhode Island. in the 500,000- plus category. The Daily News' first-place award was based on the judges' assessment of three Great Escapes sections from 1999: one devoted to the Battleship battleship, large, armored warship equipped with the heaviest naval guns. The evolution of the battleship, from the ironclad warship of the mid-19th cent., received great impetus from the Civil War. The stories were written and photographed by Travel Editor Eric Noland. The Pearl Harbor and Las Vegas covers were designed by Staff Artist Bradford Mar, the Monet cover by Staff Artist Traci Wooden. Great Escapes replaced the Daily News' old Travel section a year ago. Portions of Great Escapes appear in several of the Daily News' sister papers in the Los Angeles Newspaper Group The Los Angeles Newspaper Group is an umbrella group of local daily newspapers published in the greater Los Angeles area by MediaNews Group. The news coverage of the newspapers are mainly local stories. . Daily News Editor David J. Butler said, ``This is a great honor for Eric Noland and all of the designers, artists, editors, pressmen and others who work hard each week to make sure the section serves readers well and is of the highest quality.'' Said Butler, ``The judges' explanation of why they chose the section as the best underscores that it is a team effort that is being honored.'' The judges wrote: ``Daily News. Exceptional color: Monet garden has wonderful detail in photos that print well. The hand pictograph pictograph - pictogram (staff done) is a work of art. This is carried through the section fronts: The First Mates spread is very nice, particularly the Honolulu Star Banner page in the background. If You Go box - nice job. Inside material is very clean, easy to follow, and graphics serve to enhance. Good story ideas that are written by staff. Pictures are large, done from interesting angles, and the art heads are creative. Practical features: air fare/currency. Many entertaining and practical articles and class staff writing. Old radio was a good pick. Nice front-page focus on photos and graphics, then inside a lot of info boxes and pull-out quotes. Nice package for readers.''
