AWAKE ..AFTER 7 MTHS IN A COMA; Family's hope for Australia attack victim David, 29.

AN Irishman in a coma for seven months after being beaten in Australia opened his eyes on St Patrick's Day.

David Keohane, 29, was left for dead after being robbed and he was discovered with serious head injuries near his Sydney apartment last August.

His family has kept a daily bedside vigil since he was airlifted to Cork University Hospital in September and are overjoyed that he has regained full consciousness.

She said: "I have no doubt that David's recovery was a miracle and I am delighted for his family.

"It is always wonderful to hear about such things." South Australian-based Jesuit priest Fr Paul Gardiner added: "I was delighted to hear David had woken from his coma and I am sure it was a miracle."

Flooring contractor David, from Ballyvolane, Cork, was set upon last August 9 while walking home from a party in Coogee, a beachside suburb popular with backpackers.

Father Tom is delighted his son has now regained consciousness and told how his limbs were responding to stimulus and he was lifting his hands and legs.

The courageous young man is now giving his devoted family hope that he might be able to live a normal life.

But doctors warned that David still had a long road ahead of him.

A 19-year-old man was charged last October with attempted murder and aggravated robbery in connection with the assault.

A woman, 19, and 39-year-old man were also charged with hindering police and concealing a serious offence.
