Leading component manufacturer AVX Corporation (NYSE: AVX) announces its presence in state-of-the-art medical technology that improves control of epileptic seizures.

TAZ tantalum chip capacitors are part of the NeuroCybernetic Prosthesis (NCP) system, manufactured by Cyberonics, Inc. of Texas. It is an implantable, programmable pulse generator that delivers electrical signals to the vagus nerve, located in the neck. The capacitors, part of the electrical circuitry in the pocket-watch sized device, achieve minimum ESR levels and maximum power dissipation.

"Epilepsy is the world's second most prevalent neurological disorder," explained AVX technical marketing manager Bill Vierow. "And to know that we are helping patients control that disorder is extremely rewarding."

The NCP Pulse Generator is implanted in the upper left chest region, and attached to the vagus nerve via the NCP lead. The device is programmed to deliver electrical signals on an intermittent basis, typically 30 seconds every five minutes. The patient, with the use of an external magnet, can control the current as well. The electrical stimulation increases the seizure threshold and reduces the occurrence of seizures.

Working closely with Cyberonics engineering group, AVX technology was a key element in this unique medical product development. As tantalum technology continues to evolve, AVX is able to offer extended ratings providing more downsizing opportunities, higher bulk capacitance ratings, new case sizes and low ESR options for critical output filtering applications. The TAZ tantalum chips used in the Cyberonics device consist of both 22.0 microfarads at 10wvdc, and 22.0 microfarads at 20wvdc.

Cyberonics is conducting investigational studies with the NCP System and its effects on chronic treatment-resistant depression, and plans to initiate a clinical investigation into the treatment of morbid obesity - both of which represent major health problems.
