AVX Develops CANBus Series MLVs for Use in High and Low Speed Communication Bus Structures.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- CAN Series Offers Excellent Current and Energy Handling Capabilities, Plus EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) An electrical disturbance in a system due to natural phenomena, low-frequency waves from electromechanical devices or high-frequency waves (RFI) from chips and other electronic devices. Allowable limits are governed by the FCC.  Attenuation Loss of signal power in a transmission.
Attenuation

The reduction in level of a transmitted quantity as a function of a parameter, usually distance. It is applied mainly to acoustic or electromagnetic waves and is expressed as the ratio of power densities.

Designated the CANBus Series varistor, this surface mountable device replaces three components typically used to protect against transient voltage spikes (two back-to-back zener diodes and an EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies.  capacitor in parallel). The CANBus varistors are part of AVX's TransGuard line of transient voltage suppression devices.

The CANBus Series varistors from AVX are suitable for use in all high- and low-speed communication bus structures, including LIN, CAN and J1850. AVX's communication bus protection series is available in single, dual and quad configured packages. In addition to their transient protection capability, these devices provide EMI attenuation across a wide frequency spectrum.

Featuring the best solderability in the business, these CANBus Series devices are based on AVX's proven multilayer varistor technology, providing bi-directional ESD protection, EMI attenuation and sub-nanosecond response time.

"The CANBus Series provides automotive design engineers with highly reliable, surface mount devices that provide EMI/RFI attenuation as well as superior current and energy handling capabilities in automotive applications," said Ron Demcko, AVX Applications Engineering Manager. "When used in place of discrete diodes, these devices provide a reduction in component cost, improved system reliability and significant space savings for the designer."

Applications for the CANBus Series devices in automotive systems include port protection of CAN network I/C's, sensors and module protection, LCD screen protection and Remote Keyless Entry systems on both the transmitter and receiver.

The AVX CANBus varistors offer significant advantages for automotive systems designers in a typical CAN network, including their ability to handle high in-rush (peak) current of 4A 8 x 20 micro seconds and a FIT rate of less than or equal to 0.1 failures (per billion hours).

The CANBus Series varistors feature transient energy ratings of 0.015 Joules (10/1000 micro seconds) and a working voltage range of up to 18V and a capacitance value of 22pF at 1MHz. This series is available in 0603 size discrete chips and both 0405 two-element arrays and 0612 four-element arrays. Pricing starts at $0.055 each for the single element CANBus MLVs. Lead times are from stock to 8 weeks.
