AVT To Demonstrate Unified Messaging on Microsoft and Lotus Messaging Products.KIRKLAND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 1995--Applied Voice Technology (AVT AVT avian arginine vasotocin. See vasotocin. ) will demonstrate its voice and fax mail messaging product, CallXpress3, integrated with several e-mail products from Microsoft Corp. and Lotus Development Corp. The integration will allow subscribers to manage voice, fax and e-mail messages in a single list, either in the office or on the road. AVT will demonstrate this integration at the Electronic Messaging show in New Orleans, May 8, and at the UMiiX show in Chicago, May 16. Managing Messages In the Office AVT will demonstrate accessing CallXpress3 voice messages from Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes. Upon selecting a voice message from the e-mail client, subscribers can then listen to the voice message directly through a telephone attached to a PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN). , or through a sound-enabled PC attached to a LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. . For Microsoft Mail and Exchange products, AVT will demonstrate the use of Microsoft's Messaging Application Programming Interface (messaging) Messaging Application Programming Interface - (MAPI) A messaging architecture and a client interface component for applications such as electronic mail, scheduling, calendaring and document management. (MAPI (Mail API) A programming interface from Microsoft that enables a client application to send to and receive mail from Exchange Server or a Microsoft Mail (MS Mail) messaging system. Microsoft applications such as Outlook, the Exchange client and Microsoft Schedule use MAPI. ) to allow CallXpress3 voice messages to be managed directly from a desktop computer. AVT will demonstrate Lotus's recently announced Integrated Messaging capability, which will provide the same desktop voice-message management capability for Notes and cc:Mail. By integrating CallXpress3 with an e-mail client program, subscribers will be able to manage voice messages using familiar message management tools. By seeing who sent the message, when it was sent, and how long it is, subscribers can manage their voice messages more productively than through the traditional telephone interface. Managing Messages While Away From the Office AVT will also demonstrate accessing voice, fax and e-mail messages in a single telephone call. E-mail messages can be read using text-to-speech technology, or sent to any fax machine. This capability is provided by the E-Mail Access module of CallXpress3. E-Mail Access will be demonstrated with Microsoft Mail and Lotus Notes. E-Mail Access increases the accessibility and convenience of managing e-mail by allowing e-mail to be retrieved from any telephone. The above message retrieval and management capabilities further AVT's unified-messaging strategy, which is to allow subscribers to manage all message types in a single list, whether in the office at the desktop computer, or away from the office at a telephone. AVT products should be available by early 1996, and are dependent upon the release of software components from Lotus and Microsoft. Applied Voice Technology Inc.
