MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 2001

AbsoluteValue Systems (http://www.linux-wlan.com) is pleased to announce a major update to the AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard) A video compression technique developed by Chinese companies and supported by the Chinese government. Expected to provide better compression than MPEG-2, AVS was created to avoid paying royalties to the MPEG licensors, which are outside  Wireless LAN A local area network that transmits over the air typically in the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band. It does not require line of sight between sender and receiver. Wireless base stations (access points) are wired to an Ethernet network and transmit a radio frequency over an area  Developers Kit. The version 1.2 update adds networking features, better security, new configurations, and support for lower-cost hardware to the world's first and only Wireless LAN Developer's Kit. The Kit is a complete IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. 802.11b-compliant implementation of an 11Mbps wireless LAN system offered with tools and source code to allow easy customization.

Network and Security Features: The features added with this update address market demands for better security and network flexibility. The new 128bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) An IEEE standard security protocol for wireless 802.11 networks. Introduced in 1997, WEP was found to be very inadequate and was superseded by WPA, WPA2 and 802.11i.  encryption capability makes the wireless LAN much more secure against eavesdroppers. Network features such as Network Address Translation (NAT (Network Address Translation) An IETF standard that allows an organization to present itself to the Internet with far fewer IP addresses than there are nodes on its internal network. ) and Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Software that automatically assigns temporary IP addresses to client stations logging into an IP network. It eliminates having to manually assign permanent "static" IP addresses. DHCP software runs in servers and routers. ) server capability are key to making wireless LAN systems more useful and simpler to operate, especially in small office and home environments.

New System Configurations: This kit is no longer just an Access Point implementation. Wireless LAN technology is ideal for creating a bridge between LANs separated by distance, e.g. buildings across a street from one another. For this reason, a full point-to-multipoint bridging capability has been added to the kit. Also, management options are expanded by the addition of a web server into the package.

The updated kit utilizes industry-leading PRISM(tm) chipset technology from Intersil. Another key feature of the update is the inclusion of the latest PRISM(tm) AP firmware from Intersil which provides many improvements including enhanced WEP encryption performance, more robust roaming, and better support for multicast mode.

Developer's Kit is a technology platform allowing rapid development of WLAN system products such as access points and wireless bridges. It consists of a hardware platform, software development tools, and complete software source code for implementation of a Linux-based IEEE802.11b 11Mbps access point or bridge or specialized client. The kit has been shipping to many satisfied customers since its first release in June 2000. The major components of the kit include a target single board computer, 802.11b (11Mbps) compliant WLAN cards based on Intersil's PRISM2 chipset (PRISM2.5 support coming soon), Software Development Environment, Embedded Linux The Linux operating system configured and enhanced to work in a wide variety of applications, including handheld devices, network appliances, industrial machines and consumer electronics devices. The modularity of the Linux kernel makes it well suited to embedded systems.  Operating System operating system (OS)

, wireless drivers and utilities, full source code, and documentation.

The AVS WLAN Developer's Kit allows the setup of a fully functional Wireless LAN system within minutes of opening the box. It provides a complete hardware and software development solution that easily shaves months off a development schedule. The kit also includes all needed documentation and source code and operates at 11Mbps, the highest data rate currently allowed by the IEEE Wireless LAN standard 802.11B using the 2.4GHz unlicensed frequency band usable anywhere in the world.
