AVONDALE INDUSTRIES, INC. SHIPYARDS DIVISION AWARDED $232.5 MILLION CONTRACT

 NEW ORLEANS, July 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Avondale Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AVDL) announced that it was awarded a $232.5 million contract for construction of the new U.S. Coast Guard Icebreaker ship.
 The vessel will be approximately 420 feet long with an 82-foot beam and will be capable of breaking ice up to eight feet thick. The contract is scheduled to deliver in 1997 and is anticipated to require employment of approximately 1,000 Avondale employees at peak production.
 Albert L. Bossier Jr., Avondale's chairman, president & chief executive officer, said: "Avondale's recent performance in its Navy shipbuilding programs and in particular the company's successful experience with the recently completed T-AGS 45 contract have provided us with invaluable experience which positioned the company to be selected as the successful shipbuilder for this program."
 Avondale was notified of the award by U.S. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston (D-La.), U.S. Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.) and U.S. Rep. Billy Tauzin, who noted that the award represents a vote of confidence in Avondale by the U.S. Navy.
 Avondale Industries, Inc., headquartered in metro New Orleans, is one of the nation's leading marine fabricators. In addition to its shipbuilding operations, the company specializes in boat construction and is a major repair contractor for commercial and Navy ships. It is also involved in the modular construction of plants and components for a variety of land-based industries.
