money for building an overpass across the Metrolink tracks for Avenue S, newly widened to four lanes.

An overpass would improve safety and traffic flow by separating the road from the trains, for which motorists now must stop several times a day, officials said.

``That's something the city of Palmdale and the county have been working on for some time,'' said Norm Hickling, an aide to Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich Michael Dennis Antonovich (born 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors representing the Fifth District, which covers northern Los Angeles County, the Antelope, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, and parts of the San Fernando and San .

Palmdale now has four streets that cross the Metrolink tracks, but none has a bridge. Its mission is to improve mobility across the state. It manages the state highway system and is actively involved with public transportation systems in California.  and Metrolink are facing a lawsuit from the family of a 75-year-old woman who died in 2003 when a train slammed into her station wagon as it sat stuck in Palmdale Boulevard traffic.

The problem is that the California Transportation Commission annually distributes a total of $15 million, less than the cost of one bridge, for railroad railroad or railway, form of transportation most commonly consisting of steel rails, called tracks, on which freight cars, passenger cars, and other rolling stock are drawn by one locomotive or more.  crossings statewide.

Los Angeles County officials in the 1990s were awarded $5 million toward an overpass for Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  near Avenue P-8, just north of downtown Palmdale. That money has not been spent, and Palmdale officials would like to shift it toward building a crossing, estimated to cost $35 million, at Rancho ran·cho

The supervisors Tuesday asked the state Public Utilities Commission to add the Avenue S crossing and a second crossing for Sierra Highway, south of Palmdale, to its railroad-crossing priority list.

The southern Sierra Highway crossing would be built near Barrel Springs Road, which would be rerouted so that both roads crossed the railroad tracks in one undercrossing.

``If we can get on the list, we have a better chance of getting some funding. How much money can we get? We have no idea,'' said True Pawluk, spokeswoman on county roads.
