AVENGERS ENJOY WIN, LEAVE BIG TIP AVENGERS 58, NEW YORK 53.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955.  of collapse in the third quarter Sunday afternoon, the Avengers' season might have been saved by the left hand of Johnathan Taylor and the headiness of Greg Hopkins Greg Hopkins (November 16, 1971) is a former Arena Football League wide receiver/linebacker with the Albany Firebirds and the Los Angeles Avengers. ``The big guys up front got that one for me,'' Hopkins said. ``You've got to give credit to them. ... I'm just glad it happened that series. If (New York New York, state, United States

The victory didn't come, however, without the Avengers nearly giving back all of a 22-point second-quarter lead and wasn't secure until Chris Jackson Chris Jackson may refer to:

 with 15 seconds left.

Jackson finished with eight receptions for 125 yards and four touchdowns, none more spectacular than his one-handed touchdown catch with 6 1/2 minutes remaining that put the Avengers in front 55-38.

``He stepped up big time,'' Avengers coach Ed Hodgkiss said. ``It's not like it was first-and-10 and we were 21 up. It was third-and-10, and the game was tight. We need more plays like that.''

Jackson's catch - which he made left-handed on a 25-yard Tony Graziani pass while being covered by Chuck Wesley - came after Jason Moore recovered a momentum-changing onside kick by Remy Hamilton.

The Avengers (8-6) now will return home for their final two regular-season games clinging to the eighth and final Arena Football League playoff spot. The Avengers are third out of four teams with identical records because of a tiebreaker tie·break·er

Hodgkiss said his team is facing five consecutive must-win games - its final two against Las Vegas and Orlando to guarantee a berth in the postseason and another three to get to the ArenaBowl.

``I think the guys understand that this is just one step out of five more,'' Hodgkiss said.

But after starting the season with championship aspirations, the Avengers were on the verge of watching everything slip away with six minutes left in the third quarter.

They led just 38-32 when Dragons defensive specialist Jerald Brown wrestled the ball away from receiver Henry Douglas for a crucial turnover.

New York needed only one play to move to the Avengers 3-yard line with the chance to take the lead. But Garcia's pass met Taylor's hand, was tipped into the air and intercepted by Hopkins, who changed direction to catch up to the ball.
