AVC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: AVC WOMEN FIND INTENSITY FORWARDS PUT MARAUDERS BACK ON TRACK AFTER WEAK START.

Byline: Sean Ceglinsky Staff Writer

Inexperience and a lack of cohesiveness contributed to the Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  team losing five of its first eight games this season.

The slow start was puzzling for Marauders coach John Taylor John Taylor, or Johnny Taylor may refer to: Academic figures
  • John Taylor (1704-1766), English classical scholar
  • John Taylor (1781-1864), British publisher and Egypt scholar
  • John Taylor (Oxford), Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University 1486-1487
, but he figured winning would take care of those early-season struggles. And after two victories in the inaugural Antelope Valley College Invitational over the weekend, it appears the second-year coach was correct.

``Three weeks ago we were getting hammered by teams, but now we're playing consistent and with some intensity,'' Taylor said after AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

defeated L.A. Southwest 65-60 on Sunday to finish third in the tournament and improve to 5-9.

``The kids are starting to play really hard,'' he added. ``They're starting to understand the system. More important, they're believing in the system. At this point, I'm very pleased and I feel confident we're going to continue to play well. Teams are not going to look forward to playing us.''

The key to AVC's turnaround has been the play of forwards Rashawna Mays and Desiree Broadnax.

With each game, Mays, a freshman, has become more comfortable with her role as a low-post player. She led the Marauders in scoring in two of the three tournament games, including 22 points and 15 rebounds in the victory over Southwest.

``Some nights she takes a beating inside, but she never complains,'' Taylor said of Mays, who at 5-foot-10 has good size but is more of a finesse player. The Littlerock High graduate averages 13 points and nine rebounds per game, both team highs.

for her position but is a bigger inside presence than Mays.

A transfer from Lassen College Lassen College is a community college in Susanville, California and it is a part of the California Community Colleges system.

She had 34 rebounds in the three games and was selected to the all-tournament team.

``Desiree is physical and tenacious inside - she gets in there and battles with the big people,'' Taylor said. ``I expect a lot out of her and she gives a lot in return. Her hustle, desire and intensity really gets us going.''

``(Mays and Broadnax) complement each other well. They average a double-double night in and night out, and together they present a tough inside match-up for opposing teams.''

--Ms. Versatility: At 6-foot, Sarah Meng would seem a natural for a forward position, but the sophomore plays shooting guard The Shooting guard (SG), also known as the two or off guard,[1] is one of five traditional positions on a basketball team. Players of the position are often shorter, leaner, and quicker than forwards.  out of necessity.

And though she doesn't score much (three points per game), Meng is providing valuable floor leadership and, perhaps more important, a do-it- all philosophy the team needs - she leads the team in assists (33) and steals (29).

``She's not much on stats, but she is our unsung player,'' Taylor said. ``She causes problems because of her height and long arms. She does the little things that make the team better. She just knows the game.''

--Old friends: AVC has two nonconference games - L.A. Valley and Bakersfield - over the next two weekends before Foothill Conference play begins Jan. 2.

Saturday's game against Valley is an interesting matchup. Taylor coached the Monarchs for 12 seasons before taking the coaching position at AVC in 2000. It also will be a rematch REMATCH Cardiology Clinical trials–Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical Assistance Therapy as an alternative in Congestive Heart failure–related to use of a portable, electric left ventricular-assist system–LVAS–eg, HeartMate®  of last season's first-round game of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  regional playoffs, which the Marauders lost 64-51.

``I know the players (at Valley). In fact, I recruited most of them,'' Taylor said. ``Bottom line is: They know us and we know them - we'll be going at each other during the game. It's a good friendly rivalry and that's the way it should be.''
