The lab, in a new technology building on campus, is a much-needed component in the effort by Antelope Valley College and several universities to provide engineering education locally to facilitate the development of home-grown engineers for the aerospace industry and government.

The technology building, which will open in August, will house several laboratories, including the one to serve the college's associate degree program in engineering. Students will be able to use a variety of machines designed to test the strength of materials strength of materials, measurement in engineering of the capacity of metal, wood, concrete, and other materials to withstand stress and strain. Stress is the internal force exerted by one part of an elastic body upon the adjoining part, and strain is the deformation  under various conditions such as tension, compression, heat and chemical exposure.

``Strength of Materials,'' Engineering 220, will first be offered in the new lab in the spring 2004 semester se·mes·ter
