AVC TO OPEN RESPIRATORY PROGRAM.

LANCASTER - Responding to a need for respiratory therapists in hospitals, Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  will open a respiratory therapy program in August.

College trustees last week approved the creation of two full-time instructor positions to teach the program, which will be able to accommodate 24 men and women interested in entering the profession.

College officials began looking into the program last year after a needs assessment determined that there were 45 job openings for respiratory therapists just in the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys.

There is a national need for respiratory therapists, according to Hubbell. Adding to the local demand for therapists will be the planned 2007 opening of Palmdale Regional Medical Center Palmdale Regional Medical Center also known as Palmdale Hospital (PMC) is a private hospital that is under construction and located in Palmdale, California. This acute care facility will be the only hospital in Palmdale, the largest American city currently without a , operated by Universal Health Services

Students completing the two-year education program and passing a licensure exam can expect to start with an annual salary of $40,000 to $45,000, according to Dr. Karen Cowell, dean of the Health Sciences, Physical Education and Athletics Division at AVC.

College officials have been working to develop a program curriculum and will receive provisional accreditation that will enable students to participate in the program and take the licensure exam.

Within 18 months of the first graduating class, AVC hopes to receive full national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, Cowell said.
