Antelope Valley College trustees voted unanimously on Nov. 19 to put the bond measure on the ballot, stating that the money is needed to update the aging Lancaster campus and to start the proposed Palmdale campus. College officials are seeking bond funding to supplement state revenue that officials hope to get toward 35 projects, totaling $368.5 million, to accommodate rapidly increasing enrollment.

College district enrollment is expected to double to more than 26,000 students by 2020. College officials said Lancaster facilities are aging, and the campus lacks lab, library and office space.

The college also needs about 500 parking spaces.

The bonds would help establish a Palmdale campus at an initial cost of about $38 million, including $16.2 million in locally raised revenue.

The Palmdale campus would be part of the 540-acre College Park housing development proposed south of Barrel Springs Road between 37th and 47th streets east.

Initial enrollment at the Palmdale campus is expected to be about 3,000 students.

Among projects proposed for bond funding for the Lancaster campus is a $23.1 million effort to expand student services by adding a new building and renovating the existing building. Of the $23.1 million, the college estimates it will be responsible for providing $16.5 million.
