Byline: Greg Botonis Staff Writer

A 26-year-old student at Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  has taken an interest in public speaking to the next level - earning an award at a state championship and qualifying for a national title.

Jeannie Kyllonen, of Lancaster, took second place at the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. With the win, she has the opportunity to participate next month in the national competition in January.

``The public speaking course was just a course I took as a prerequisite, and it was actually the instructor who got me into the competitions,'' said Kyllonen.

Kyllonen, a nursing student, was the only participant in the state competition who was not from a university with an organized and funded public speaking team.

``She went on her own and paid for everything out of her own pocket,'' said the course instructor, Dwayne Smith. ``We all thought she was good enough and she just seemed to have a natural ability and she proved us right.''

The state competition, at which Kyllonen spoke about the medical uses of blood from newborns' umbilical cords, was actually her second competition; she won fifth place at a Southern California competition at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , earlier this year. At that tournament, she was also the only attendant without a team and again paid for the trip out of her own pocket.

Kyllonen, who has two daughters and two sons ranging from ages 2-10, has organized a public speaking team at AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

``It's all done on our own time and it takes a lot of it, but there are a lot of us that want to go to the nationals,'' said Kyllonen.

Kyllonen and Smith are discussing the idea of a school-funded team with AVC officials, but as of yet officials have not agreed to fund the team.

``It's a good opportunity to be able to participate in these competitions, and should benefit any hospital I work with,'' said Kyllonen.
