AVC SHOOTING FOR WIN ON FAMILIAR COURT.

Byline: Bryan Winchell Special to the Daily News

When the Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  men's basketball team travels Friday to Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  for its season-opener against L.A. Harbor in the Santa Monica tournament, it will be in familiar territory.

The thing is, the Marauders probably don't want to remember the last time they were in Santa Monica's gym.

That was in the final round of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  playoffs last season, when Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region.  lost in overtime to Santa Monica after regulation ended in a series of controversial calls. A win would have put Antelope Valley in its first state tournament.

``It was pretty gut-wrenching,'' coach Newton Chelette said.

Chelette and his Marauders, though, will try to forget the difficult ending and build on the fact that they had never advanced into the third round of the playoffs.

And with three returning starters and a slew of talented newcomers, Chelette feels this could be one of his best teams in his eight years at Antelope Valley.

``I felt like last year we were overachievers,'' Chelette said of the team that finished 26-7 overall and was 8-0 for the first time ever in the Foothill Conference. ``If this group has the same work habits, we have a chance to be better and make the state tournament.''

The main reason Chelette feels so good is the point guard position. The team returns last year's starter, Mike Hamelin (7.1 points, 5.4 assists per game), and adds freshmen Trevor Beal (Victor Valley High) and Bronson Pitts (Littlerock High).

``We've got three legitimate point guards, and all three will get time,'' Chelette said. ``Sometimes point guards can't shoot, but all three can score and shoot the three and take care of the ball.''

Hamelin was an all-conference selection last year, Beal was the MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. ``I think one of our strengths is our ability to press and take care of the ball because of our guard situation,'' Chelette said.

Chelette also has freshman John Burrell John Buster Burrell (born November 22, 1940 in Fort Worth, Texas) was an American football wide receiver in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Washington Redskins. ``In my opinion, John was one of the best players in California that I saw,'' Chelette said. ``He has a tremendous ability to score off the dribble and he is developing into a legitimate three-point shooter.''

Because of their style of play and depth at guard, the Marauders will employ a three-guard lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. .

But Antelope Valley isn't exactly hurting on the inside, either. Six-foot-8 center Shaun Murray Shaun Murray is a four-time World champion wakeboarder, and the main character featured in Activision's video game "Wakeboarding Unleashed". Early Life

``Jonathan is a guard/forward type and is very, very athletic,'' Chelette said. ``Shaun is a legitimate center. He's got a good, soft turnaround jumper and he rebounds well.''

While the state tournament is the ultimate goal, Chelette wants to focus on one game at a time as his team goes for its third-straight Foothill Conference title.

``You never know how the chemistry is going to be until you face some players in different uniforms,'' Chelette said. ``But I'm excited because I think we've got a chance to be better than last year.''
