AVC PRESIDENT TO RETIRE LARIOS TO END 33-YEAR CAREER ON AUG. 31.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

LANCASTER - Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  President Daniel Larios announced Thursday he will retire effective Aug. 31, ending a 33-year career in education.

Larios, whose contract was just amended seven weeks ago to run through June 2006, made the announcement during an afternoon meeting with college administrators and later sent an e-mail to college faculty and staff.

Larios said only that he would be retiring from education and did not identify the other interests that are attracting him.

``I have enjoyed the many experiences I have had since 1970, but feel it is time to pursue other interests,'' Larios was quoted in a college announcement of his retirement.

Lee said she would not seek the permanent position.

Larios' announcement came as a surprise to the college board, board president Betty Wienke said.

``We're disappointed,'' Wienke said. ``He's done an excellent job in these tough budget times.''

Trustees said that Larios' achievements during his two years at AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

included keeping the college on solid financial footing while dealing with the fallout from the state budget crisis. The college was able to avoid layoffs.

``This college is in much better shape than other colleges in regards to the budget,'' college board member Steve Buffalo said.

Board members indicated that, unlike most recent searches, the one for Larios' successor will be conducted by district personnel, rather than a consultant.

``It's going to take at least six to nine months - maybe even 12 months,'' said college board member Michael Adams

In the press release announcing his retirement, Larios praised the college for achievements during his tenure. He noted that course offerings were increased, outreach into high schools was expanded, layoffs were avoided, an emergency-preparedness plan was developed, and operating hours were expanded at the college learning center and library.

In June, the college board voted to extend Larios' contract by one year to run through June 30, 2006.

College officials said Larios indicated when he was hired that AVC would be the last stop in his education career.

``When Dr. Larios started in 2001, he said this would be his last presidency,'' said college spokesman Steve Standerfer. ``We figured this would be where he ended his career.''
