AVC NOTES: AVC GRAD CHAMBERS FINALLY MAKES SI.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Almost 40 years later, John Chambers John Chambers could be any of the following people:

  • John Chambers (programmer), the creator of the S programming language and core member of the R programming language project.
can finally say he's a face in the crowd A Face in the Crowd (1957) is an epic motion picture starring Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal, and Walter Matthau, directed by Elia Kazan. The screenplay was written by Budd Schulberg, based on his own short story "The Arkansas Traveler". , just like buddy Newton Chelette.

It has over 3 million subscribers and is read by 23 million adults each week, including over 18 million men, 19% of the adult males in the country. .

In the magazine's January 19 issue, Chambers' mug shot appeared in Faces In The Crowd, which honors athletes and coaches for achievement that would probably not be noticed by the casual fan.

In December, Chambers' record-setting 589th win came in the same building he christened when the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

Chambers won career-game No. 601 Saturday when the 20-4 Eagles beat his JC alma mater 102-86.

``For a while I started worrying about the SI curse,'' joked Chambers, whose team, ranked seventh in the state, saw a 22-point lead sliced to eight in the second half before prevailing.

Actually, Chambers thought Sports Illustrated would come calling when he went 21 for 21 from the foul line foul line

``I was told Sports Illustrated was going to call and put me in Faces In The Crowd but the next night some guy back East made like 22 in a row and he bumped me,'' Chambers said with a laugh.

Chelette's career also drew Sports Illustrated's attention when he was a 34-year-old rookie head coach at Southeastern Louisiana. Faces In The Crowd let its readers know Chelette was the NCAA's youngest Division I head coach.

``I think that's neat,'' Chelette said of the Sports Illustrated connection between himself and Chambers, who improved to 6-10 against Chelette-coached AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

``We talked like three times before Saturday's game,'' Chelette said. ``He told me his team had a bad practice and wasn't playing well. I told him `John, you're struggling with your team and I am struggling with my team.' ''

Chelette, knowing his 9-14 Marauders would be outmanned by what he calls Chambers' best team, illustrated just how close and special their relationship as coaches and conference rivals has become.

``I told him `Don't worry about my feelings. You do what you have to do make your kids feel good about themselves,' '' Chelette said.

Island hopping Island hopping is a term that has several different definitions as it is applied in various fields. Generally, the term refers to the means of crossing an ocean by a series of shorter journeys between islands, as opposed to a single journey directly across the ocean to the : Of course Mike Paul is sure to spend some time on the lush beaches of Waikiki.

But that's not the No. 1 reason why the Marauders' sophomore guard accepted a scholarship to play at Hawaii Pacific University Hawaiʻi Pacific University (also known as HPU) is a private coeducational university in Honolulu, Hawaii, founded in 1965 as Hawaii Pacific College by Paul C.T. Loo, Eureka Forbes, Elizabeth W. , located in downtown Honolulu.

``People hear the word Hawaii and think about the surroundings, the beaches, the girls. But there are girls at every school,'' Paul said, cracking a smile. ``I am going there to play basketball and get an education.''

Hawaii Pacific has a student body of 8,500, has moved up to Division II this season and hosts an annual tournament loaded with Division I opponents. This year's Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic included Baylor, Illinois State and Southern Mississippi.

That the Sea Warriors landed Paul, a Highland High graduate, is nothing new. HPU's current roster includes four California JC products.

``I am really happy for Michael. The best thing is he is going to get his (Associate Arts) degree and he gets two years of his education paid for,'' Chelette said. ``They could pay my way for an education in Hawaii for two years.''

On a roll: The AVC women's basketball team is beginning to flex its muscles.

The Marauders' nine-game winning streak is the longest such run in school history dating back to 1983.

The Marauders (14-7) crushed Mt. San Jacinto 108-22 before taking it easy on Cerro Coso Saturday, beating the Coyotes 80-62 to improve to 6-0 in Foothill Conference play.

``I think we're really coming together as a team,'' said sophomore post player Davia Shannon. ``You could just see it on the bench. Everyone is contributing right now.''

In the Cerro Coso game, all eight Marauders scored, with five reaching double figures.

Coach Jackie Lott hoped her team would be no worse than 6-2 at the midway mark of the conference schedule. And the Marauders are perfect entering two road tests: Rio Hondo on Thursday and defending Foothill champion San Bernardino on Saturday.

``In the beginning of the season I thought we could beat anybody on our schedule but we also could lose to anybody,'' Lott said. ``I think back then we thought we could to lose to anybody. Now we think we can beat anybody.''

Lost and found: Though she decided to sign with Cal State Fullerton, Shannon had an enjoyable trip to Fresno State. At least she thought so.

Shannon lost her wallet in Fresno. And she didn't realize it until she was ready to board the plane for the return trip home.

``I never had to use my wallet so I just thought I had put it away,'' Shannon said.

There wasn't any problem until Shannon was informed someone had opened up three new bank accounts in her name.

``I have to go back up to Fresno and press charges,'' Shannon said. ``It was a good trip until I got that call from my bank. Then it was a bad trip.''
