--Play ball: After years of mediocrity, the baseball program appears to be heading in the right direction. And Jeffrey Leonard
Jeffrey Leonard (born September 22, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a former outfielder in Major League Baseball with a 14-year career from 1977 to 1990. He played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and San Francisco Giants, all of the National League, and
wouldn't have it any other way.

After taking over the full-time head-coaching position in January, Leonard, a former major leaguer, is pleased with the progress his players are making.

``The class is still going strong,'' Leonard said of the more than 30 prospective players practicing with the team, which will open at home Feb. 11 against San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. On the team's first day of tryouts 72 players showed up, a surprising number to Leonard, who expects to carry 25 to 28 players to start the season.

``I couldn't believe how many players came out,'' Leonard said. ``I made it perfectly clear when the class began that everyone is not going to make it.''

For obvious reasons, Leonard lends credibility to the program. He made his major-league debut with the Dodgers in 1977 and played for the Houston Astros “Astros” redirects here. For other uses, see Astros (disambiguation).

``The door is open (for the players),'' he said. ``I've found different ways to communicate, and the kids are listening. I gave them the option of doing it the college way or the college and professional way. They get a flavor of the pro level. You have to have something fresh to motivate them.''
