AVC NOTEBOOK: THREE LOSSES HURT MARAUDERS' BID; AVC (12-14) MUST WIN LAST 3.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

This is the time of year when Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  women's basketball Women's basketball is one of the few games which developed in tandem with men's. It became popular, spreading from the east coast of the United States to the west coast, in large part via women's colleges.  coach Jackie Lott needs consistency from her Marauders.

It was happening as late as 12 days ago. The Marauders had reeled off five straight wins to ease over the .500 mark for the first time this season.

It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west ) and second-place (Chaffey) teams routed the Marauders by 20 and 19 points, respectively. In between, host Victor Valley beat them 75-67 to drop AVC into a fourth-place tie at 7-5.

``I didn't think we'd go 0-3 during that stretch. I thought at least 2-1 and maybe 1-2,'' Lott said. ``When you go play two on the road, you have to win at home.''

The 12-14 Marauders might have to run the table over the final three games to make a better case for an at-large playoff berth. Last season, a more experienced team was awarded a bid after finishing 16-14 with a first-round loss.

``We're just trying to get a little momentum and improve our win-loss record,'' said Lott, whose team hosts 2-22 Mt. Post time: The emergence of 6-foot-3 freshman Davia Shannon, a 24-year-old mother of two who hadn't played basketball since high school, has given the Marauders a strong presence at center.

Starter Ebony Davis, a 6-3 freshman who also had a layoff from basketball, is leading the team with 9.4 rebounds a game. Shannon, a starter in five of 25 games, has produced almost six rebounds a game in conference play.

Lott credits first-year assistant coach Jeff Lensch, whose primary duties has been working with AVC's post players.

``Davia Shannon has been a major surprise,'' Lott said. ``Coach Lensch has a lot to do with those players developing so quickly.''

Men's basketball: The Marauders survived a 75-71 win at Victor Valley on Saturday and have a week to prepare for Saturday's home game against Barstow.

Academic achievement: AVC will honor two of its outgoing student-athletes at halftime of the men's basketball game Saturday night.
