But the Marauders, the defending Foothill Conference champions, are back to their winning ways. AVC (11-23, 5-2) had won seven in a row before a conference game Wednesday at Cerro Coso.

``I've got to be honest, it was tough to get out of that losing mode,'' MacQuarrie said.

Inconsistent pitching, struggling defense and little chemistry among the freshman-dominated team contributed to AVC losing 14 of 15.

``Some of the stuff was mental so we went back to the basics, back to the drawing board,'' MacQuarrie said. ``We worked on the fundamentals and the kids needed that. We broke things down and worked on specific areas. It took us awhile, but things are going better now.''

AVC continues conference play Friday with a 3:15 p.m. game against visiting Mt.
