AVC NOTEBOOK: MARAUDERS RUNNERS AMONG FOOTHILL FAVORITES.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

All of the close calls and the wrong turns can be forgotten when the Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. The Marauders should be among the favorites, led by standout sophomore Mike Barkhuff, who has finished no worse than 10th individually in AVC's four meets.

As a team, the Marauders have fared just as well, placing sixth in Fresno, second in Oceanside, fourth in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  and second in Santa Barbara.

Then on Oct. 17 at the Santa Barbara Invitational, coach Mark Covert's team was dominant, placing four runners among the top six. But their fifth scorer Casey McAndrew ran 24th and AVC had to settle for runner-up status behind state power Glendale.

The Marauders' top four runners are Barkhuff, Aaron Williams, Luis Monge and Geoff Thurber.

AVC's group of three women, Gina Villanueva, Diana Russo and Tina Villanueva, will also be competing at today's meet.

New coaches: Both the Marauders men's and women's basketball head coaches, Newton Chelette and Jackie Lott, welcome new assistant coaches to the bench.

Chelette lost longtime assistant Brad Wiggs but brought in someone familiar to the AVC campus. John Spravka comes over from Tehachapi High, where he coached the Warriors girls' team.

Spravka was formerly a women's assistant coach with the Marauders under Lott, who hired Chimane Creer to join AVC's coaching staff.

Creer had a very successful career as a head coach at Davis High in Salt Lake City, where Lott said she produced several NCAA NCAA

Quality win: On Sept. 19, AVC's cliffhanging, 21-14 victory over visiting College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. Now, in late October, the Marauders can boast a win over a nationally ranked team. Canyons was ranked 25th in the nation, 10th in the state and sixth in Southern California on Saturday, when the Cougars beat Santa Barbara 46-18.

Alumni report: Former AVC teammates and wide receivers JaQuay Bangs and Ronnie Blair continued their careers together at Division II Wayne (Neb.) State.

It hasn't been a good season for the Wildcats, though. Wayne State dropped to 1-7 with a 30-2 loss at Chadron State on Saturday, with both Blair and Bangs going without a reception.

Blair's best game was a six-catch, 47-yard reception effort, while Bangs caught two passes for 54 yards in Wayne State's only victory, a 26-7 decision over Moorhead State on Oct. 18.

In the defeat at Chadron State, Bangs and Blair probably got some ribbing from former Marauders teammate Eddie Storm, who registered three sacks for the Eagles.
