AVC NOTEBOOK: MARAUDERS PLAGUED BY FIRST-HALF BLUES.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  sports information officer Glenn Haller likes to include a ``Meaningless Stat of the Week'' tidbit in his football press releases.

Here's a fact that is not meaningless or trivial. If anything, its importance can't be ignored, regardless whether or not the Marauders would like to bury it somewhere.

Through four games the Marauders have been outscored 76-13 in the first half by their opponents.

Consider Saturday's 27-14 loss to Mount San Jacinto Mount San Jacinto may refer to
  • A dormant volcano located on Kruzof Island in Alaska, U.S., currently named Mount Edgecumbe
  • San Jacinto Peak, the highest peak in Riverside County, California
. Better yet, take a look at the first half.

The Eagles outscored the Marauders 27-6 in the game's first 30 minutes. AVC's 8-0 margin in the second half doesn't mean much.

It was 14-0 just 1 minute, 40 seconds into the game, Mt. San Jacinto San Jacinto, river, c.130 mi (210 km) long, rising in SE Texas as the West Fork and flowing S to Galveston Bay. Its chief tributary is Buffalo Bayou, and both the bayou and the lower river are used for the Houston ship channel.  driving 69 yards in just four plays for a touchdown and adding another after a fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Kasey Young's 6-yard touchdown run aside, the rest of the half was a disaster for the Marauders.

coach Brent Carder said. ``I guess that's why the ball is shaped like it is.''

When the Marauders got a break, a recovered fumble, they gave it right up again when Tyree Booker was stripped of the ball when the play was thought to be over on the sideline. Thirty-six yards later Jeff Shields was in the end zone and the Eagles led 21-6.

The first-half fiasco wasn't over yet. The Marauders got favorable field position, starting a drive at the San Jacinto 32. They had a first-and-goal at the 5, but quarterback Monte Gutowski fired four straight incompletions, half of which were dropped by his receivers.

The next 4:38 was predictable, the Eagles traveling 95 yards for the touchdown that made AVC's second-half improvement moot.

Perhaps not. The Marauders needed a boost and got it when Gutowski threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Andre Velazquez and the ensuing two-point conversion In American football and Canadian football, a team may try to score a two-point conversion (score two points) instead of an extra point (one point) immediately after it scores a touchdown.  to Booker.

``At the half it should have been 14-14. . . . That was probably the best game we've played as a team,'' Carder said.

The Marauders finished with season-highs in passing (199), total yards (309) and first downs (17), among others.

``We'll start winning games soon,'' Carder said.

This Saturday would seem like a good opportunity to test Carder's theory. Alumni report: Defensive lineman Eddie Storm has made the most of his playing time at Division II Chadron (Neb.) State.

The Mojave High product, who registered four sacks for the 1997 Marauders, had three tackles for loss and a sack for a total of 16 yards lost by opponents in Chadron State's first four games.
