AVC NOTEBOOK: AVC VOLLEYBALL SETTING THE TONE.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

The Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  volleyball team is learning quickly.

Amy Glennan is the lone returning player at coach Jane Cwayna's disposal, and considering her limited role in 1997, it's difficult to label the sophomore a veteran.

Toss in seven freshmen, and any kind of early Marauders success would be considered gravy.

Still, as they host Cypress in a 5 p.m. match tonight, take a gander Gander, town (1991 pop. 10,339), NE Newfoundland, N.L., Canada. Gander's airport, an important base in World War II, is a hub for international flights; it also attracts many refugees. ``It's nice to get some in the win column. We haven't started well the past couple years,'' said Cwayna, in her 18th season as AVC's head coach.

About the only negative for AVC thus far was the loss to Yuba on Saturday. In a one-game elimination match, the Marauders fell 15-6 after they scored a 15-10, 15-3 victory over the same opponent.

``We couldn't pass, didn't block well and I think we were a little tired,'' Cwayna said. ``We haven't been able to be in the gym (to practice) as much as we've wanted to. It was a long day (Saturday), and we have to be in better shape.''

Following tonight's match, the Marauders get a week off to recover from the tournament.

Size matters: Cwayna hasn't produced this kind of height and/or hitting power in some time.

Jennifer Keating, who 5-foot-11 freshman who starred at Palmdale High last fall, and 6-foot-1 AVC basketball standout Ebony Davis could pose matchup problems for opposing front rows. Keating leads the team with 48 kills and Davis has recorded 13 blocks in AVC's four dual matches.

``Jennifer has done a great job for us,'' Cwayna said. ``Ebony can be as good as she wants to be.''

Glennan has been the top digger with 43 and Cwayna praised the early work of setter Denise Cabrido. The Mojave High product has dished dished

The AVC men shouldn't need much motivation based on their previous performance. At the MiraCosta event in Oceanside on Sept. 18, the Marauders' chances of winning took a detour, literally.

Sophomore Mike Barkhuff was running strong with the leaders at the 2-mile mark when a race official steered him off the course.

Barkhuff got back on track but finished 10th.

Diana Russo and Tina Villanueva were AVC's top women's runners at MiraCosta.

Men's basketball: It probably won't make coach Newton Chelette any happier, but for the record add another win to AVC's 1997-98 season.
