AVC NOTEBOOK: AVC RIDES DEFENSE TO TITLE.

The good defense has led to better offense for AVC, which has scored more than 69 points in every conference game, highlighted by a streak of three consecutive games in which the Marauders scored at least 90 points.

, the Marauders enter Saturday's 5 p.m. regular-season finale against visiting Barstow with an opportunity to go undefeated in conference play for the first time.

``Since we already won (the conference title), there hasn't been too much on the line, yet we're still playing with intensity,'' Taylor said. ``(The players) never rest on their laurels. They want to do their best every night.

``It makes me real proud, and I haven't been able to say that much this season because you want to save that stuff for the end-of-the-season banquet. We have this chemistry, and it's great.''

The Marauders have been the top-ranked team in Southern California and were as high as No. 2 in the state for several weeks this season. But a recent slump in which AVC lost 3 of 5 games left doubts about the team's focus, and forced it into a tight conference race with San Bernardino Valley and Chaffey - both just a half-game behind with two games remaining.

 advantage over both teams, so a victory Saturday would secure the title and the conference's top seed in the Southern California Regional playoffs, which begin Feb. 28.

``Like I've always said, junior-college basketball is a marathon. You just have to keep going,'' Chelette said. ``We've been resilient.''

--Play ball: The baseball team finished 1-2-1 in nonconference play and now turns its attention to the Foothill Conference this week.

The Marauders begin with today's game at Barstow, followed by a home game Thursday against Desert and Saturday's game at Mt. San Jacinto.

--Turnaround in order: After losing four consecutive games in the Visalia tournament, the women's softball team has all week to think about went wrong. Its next game is Feb. 28 at home against Cerro Coso in the Foothill Conference opener.

--Impact Player: One of the reasons for AVC's success this season has been the play of freshman point guard Mike Webb, who's averaging 13 points, three rebounds and two asists per game.
